World Mental Health Awareness Week

This year, Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 15th to 21st May.
Mental health issues are prevalent in the UK. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is “Anxiety” with the aim to raise awareness and knowledge of anxiety by providing resources and support.
The Mental Health Awareness Week campaign is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness, reflect on mental health, address stigma and discrimination surrounding mental health, and learn how to build a world that protects our mental wellbeing and prevents mental health issues from emerging.
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues that people confront. Health problems, built-up stress, personal relationships, losing someone close to you, loneliness, exams pressures, starting or losing a job, financial circumstances, and other major life events can contribute to feelings of anxiety. The UK population is experiencing widespread levels of anxiety with more than 8 million people living with an anxiety disorder, according to Mental Health UK.
Here are some suggestions to cope with feelings of anxiety:
- Focus on breathing exercises
- Eat a healthy diet
- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day for your mental wellbeing (E.g., Stretches, seated exercises, walk, run, swimming, fitness class)
- Try yoga and meditation to relax your mind, sleep better, reduce stress and anxiety
- Talk about feelings and emotions with someone you trust
- Keep a diary
- Spend time in nature
- Practise mindfulness
- Listen to relaxing and calming music
- Get regular check-ups with your GP or health professional
Connection is also vital for mental health. Make sure you are nurturing the connections that are important to you.
If you, or anybody you know are experiencing any anxiety, or any mental health challenges presently - here are a few links to some national organisations and charities that may be able to offer some support and guidance:
Mind – is a mental health charity in England and Wales, offering support, advice, and resources for those struggling with their mental health and family members.
Mental Health Foundation – a UK charity, whose mission is to help people to thrive through their mental health difficulties by offering support and resources.
Mental Health UK – works across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland to support people affected by mental health problems.
Please also don't forget that you are able to book a session on Santus with one of the impartial and independent coaches that will do all they can to assist you. There is also a plethora of resources and assessment tools on Lifeworks in the Wellbeing sesion.
