Wrap Around Care for Tirzepatide.

You may have seen in the news that Tirzpeatide (Under the brand name Mounjaro) has recently been authorised for prescription within primary care in England: news update from BBC.

Tirzepatide is one of a new wave of drugs focused on helping patients to lose weight, you may have heard or seen of others – Like Ozempic. However, Tirzepatide is unique in England, as it’s the only one of this new wave of drugs (Called GLP-1 drugs) which will be available through primary care eg. (GP surgeries etc) and outside of secondary care services. The significant part of this for Thrive Tribe, is that any prescription of Tirzepatide in primary care must be accompanied by a referral to a ‘behavioural support programme’ – Formally known as Behavioural Support for Obesity Prescribing (BSOP) but being referred to as ‘Wrap Around Care’.

NHS England have been forced to act quickly on this Tirzepatide rollout, with NICE and the government wanting patients to have access to the drug via primary care by Monday 23^rd June – A fortnight or so ago.

This provided real procurement challenges for NHS England who have put in place an ‘interim solution’ to last until at least March 2026,at which point a large, national procurement process will determine the long-term vision and service for Tirzepatide prescribing across the country. This ‘interim solution’ involves using NHS England’s NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NDPP) providers to rollout the ‘wrap around care’ element of the new pathway under the Healthier You brand. As of one of these providers, this leads to exciting new opportunities for Thrive Tribe.

As such, we are partway through the mobilisation of a new programme attached to our seven Healthier You (NDPP) services and have experienced a somewhat soft launch in the last fortnight – We have already received two referrals, and we’re working with our seven local NHS partners to ensure their prescribing pathways are live. Over the next 9-months minimum we will begin to start patients on a new, adapted Healthier You programme, focused on supporting their weight loss, while they are prescribed Tirzepatide from primary care.

Being involved in this pathway from the very inception provides us with a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of healthcare and weight loss advances, as well as the chance to test programme content, methods of delivery etc. ahead of a large tender for what replaces the ‘interim solution’.
