Together we have changed history with our MiscarriageMatters campaign!
Along-awaited independent report on NHS miscarriage care – was published on Saturday, with the Government responding the same day.
At present, women and birthing people in the UK must have 3 miscarriages before they qualify for care or pre-conception advice that could prevent the loss of another baby and we have been working hard to change this through our campaign to improve miscarriage care.
Almost all our Miscarriage Matters recommendations have been included, such as the introduction of our ‘Graded Model of Care’,designed by researchers at our National Centre for Miscarriage Research.
Crucially, this new approach would mean families don’t have to experience 3 losses in arow before they get support. The Government has committed to reviewing our newmodel, which is currently being trialled at Birmingham Women’s Hospital, to access how they could roll this out on a national scale.
Under the Graded Model of care:
- After a first miscarriage, women and birthing people would be seen by a healthcare professional, screened for mental health, and provided with guidance and information to reduce the risk of future miscarriages.
- After two miscarriages, they would have an appointment with a nurse or midwife-led clinic in an Early Pregnancy Unit and have access to further tests, referred for specialist’s care and have access to early reassurance scans in future pregnancies.
- Following a third miscarriage they would have a consultant-led appointment at a recurrent miscarriage clinic, and further advanced tests and treatments.
This marks such an important milestone in our #MiscarriageMatters campaign and thanks to supporters like you who helped us along the way such as sharing the campaign and signing the petition, progress has finally been made.
We’re one step closer to introducing a new approach to miscarriage care that is compassionate, flexible, and equitable for all and we couldn’t be more grateful for your ongoing support.
Thank you for joining us on this journey to make pregnancy and birth safe for everyone.
