December L&D Updates

Successes
Welcome to December's L&D update. Over the past few months, I’ve had the opportunity to meet with a range of teams, including Health Coaches, AWM and DPP teams, to better understand the skills and knowledge you feel should be included within a learning pathway for your specific roles. I’m pleased to say that these conversations have generated many insightful ideas, which I’ve begun to collate and group together. One topic that came up frequently during these discussions was alcohol awareness. I’m mindful that there has been a gap in our training offer since we stopped delivering the RPSH alcohol awareness course, so it felt like a natural place to start. I’m delighted to share that we launched our own alcohol awareness training course last week. This can be accessed via Totem > People Portal > Training, and you’ll also find a direct link at the bottom of this article.
What have we been working on this month?
This month, I’ve continued developing additional resources to support the behaviour change training. Most recently, I added an agenda mapping resource to the training offer. This includes an agenda mapping sheet to use with your clients, alongside a separate “prompt” sheet for your own use, designed to help guide conversations more effectively. You’ll find the link to this resource at the bottom of this article.
What’s new?
One key piece of feedback from the behaviour change training has been the need for opportunities to practise these skills. In response, I’ve developed a practical role-play resource that can be used during team CPD sessions or by small groups within a team. The resource is split into two parts. The first focuses on Level 1 behaviour change, with scenarios designed to practise OARS and the elicit–provide–elicit framework. The second is aimed at those who have completed Level 2 behaviour change training and encourages the use of a broader range of behaviour change techniques to support more complex conversations. Self-reflection is a key element of this activity, helping to enhance self-awareness and support personal development. This resource will be introduced to leads in the new year, so watch this space.
How can you help?
Following discussions with teams about the knowledge areas they’d like to see developed, I’ve collated 12 different health-related topics for future training. I know there are many people across Thrive Tribe who are passionate about sharing their knowledge and have expertise in a wide range of areas. If you’d be interested in getting involved in developing training on topics such as diabetes, arthritis or gut health, please take a look at my other Totem article named "Get involved in developing training content" for more information.
What's next?
In the new year, I’m hoping to launch both the practical behaviour change skills resource for leads and a new leader’s induction brochure. Leaders have often been overlooked when it comes to structured induction, so I’m really excited to be able to share this new resource with them. Finally, I’d like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a very happy New Year!
