Being an Ally for the LGBTQ+ Community

This morning I attended an incredibly informative webinar hosted by The Happiness Index on ‘Creating Safe Spaces for the Trans Community’ in honour of Pride month. Katie Neeves, Trans Ambassador & founder of Cool2BTrans, shared her incredible story and top tips for being a trans ally, along with Margot Slattery, Global Head of D&I at ISS, who discussed how we can create safe and inclusive spaces in the workplace.
It was packed full of information but I wanted to share some key takeaways with you all on how each of us can be a better ally and create a safe working environment for the LGBTQ+ community!
1. Language is important. Being an LGBTQ+ ally is easy, if you agree in equality and fair treatment in society then you already are an ally! However many of us fear that we are going to ‘say something wrong’ through a lack of knowledge and awareness, therefore the starting point can be doing something as simple as educating ourselves on LGBTQ+ terminology - you can find a glossary of terms here!
2. Respect pronouns. When someone transitions or changes their pronouns it can be hard to get used to. It is important that we respect someone’s pronouns as it shows acceptance for who they really are. If you are ever unsure, just ask! This shows that you care and have a willingness to get it right. LinkedIn now have an option for you to add your pronouns to your profile, this type of action normalises the use of pronouns for everyone and can help to reduce discrimination.
3. Show your support. Show empathy, give support and acknowledge how hard it is for those who have faced prejudice and discrimination as a result of their gender or sexual orientation. Let the LGBTQ+ community know that you stand with them by attending Pride events, speaking up against transphobia, listening to lived experiences and joining the conversation. Most importantly, we should all strive to better our awareness of how to help achieve equality for all!
